ECOLOGICAL VARIETY TESTING OF MELON AND WATERMELON ACCESSIONS OF SOUTH KOREAN BREEDING UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF SOUTHEAST KAZAKHSTAN

Abstract

This article presents results of evaluating melon and watermelon varieties from South Korea according to a set of biological and economically valuable characteristicsin conditions of southeastern Kazakhstan. As a result of the work carried out, the most productive melon and watermelon samples with a complex of economically valuable features were identified.The purpose of this study is to determine adaptability of melon and watermelon varieties of Korean selection in conditions of foothill zone of southeast Kazakhstan.

             The research was conducted on basis of the Kainar Regional Branch of the Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing. The growth and development of melon and watermelon varieties from South Korea in soil and climatic conditions of foothill zone of southeast of the Republic of Kazakhstan was studied. In research, we studied morphological features of melon and watermelon by plants and separately by fruits.

             According to results of phenological observations, 3 melon samples were classified as medium-ripened and 2 samples were classified as medium-late ripening groups.

The Melon Seed Santofe and Melon Seed Sorren to Salmеn samples were distinguished by their productivity. In the conditions of the southeast of  Kazakhstan, Melon Seed Silver Wave and Melon Seed Earlis samples showed low yields compared to standard varieties of domestic breeding. The selected varieties will be used in further breeding work.

             The results of study revealed that certain varieties of melon and watermelon from South Korea show high adaptability and plasticity in conditions of foothill zone of southeastern Kazakhstan. These variety samples can be used in breeding work to create new varieties and hybrids that meet requirements of modern market.

Watermelon Seed Jikkomi sample is recommended for production as a portioned watermelon for sales through supermarket chains, and for possible zoning in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
